Dear Reader,

Larry the Letter Carrier cruised into Peru the other day and I began telling him about my day at the salon, and he was like, whoa mate – put it in a letter so I can share with my online friends.

My name is Sofie Sloth, and I have hair that is matted, tangled, and messy. Most sloths have this kind of hair, and it just is not fair. I want soft, long, flowing hair so I can look dressy. I have a family of moths that cover my hair like confetti. My fur is their home, so I am never alone! I don’t want the moths to move, but I want my hair pretty and smooth.

As you may know, sloths move very slow. We live in a canopy of trees, and it takes me hours to move a mile, but I wanted to go to the Amazon Salon. I knew the trip would take me all day, but that was OK. Once I reached the rainforest floor, I passed a shoe store and florist before reaching the salon door. Once inside, I was surprised! I saw so many friends getting their ends trimmed. My friend Selene now had pink hair, not algae green. She was still hairy, but now looked like a pink fairy!

While I was waiting for a chair, a moth buzzed from my hair. “Please don’t make us leave here”. The moths were family to me, so I wanted to keep them happy. I thought and thought about the moths. What could I do? Then I remembered the shoe store sold more than just shoes. I went back and got a backpack. Once in the salon chair, they began to trim my hair. Each little piece I placed on the backpack. My hair would still care for the moths, they would live on the backpack on my back. My hair was no longer matted, tangled and messy. It was smooth, soft and dressy. The moths covered my backpack like confetti. They were happy.

Slowly, we made the trip back home. Together we lived in the canopy of trees as happy as could be.

Your friend,

Sofie Sloth

Do you remember? What kind of hair do sloths have? How do sloths move? What color hair does Selene have?

Additional tidbits – There are two types of sloths, 2-toed and 3-toed. Various insects live in the hair of the sloth, including more than 120 moths! Although their hair is messy, you may think they are smelly, but sloths have no body odor. They smell like the forest. And because of the algae on their hair, they also look like the forest! Talk about smelly, sloths go to the potty once a week. They climb to the rainforest floor, dig a hole and poop! Sloths live in the rainforest of Peru. The Amazon rainforest is the largest rainforest on earth. More than half of the world’s plant and animal species make their home in the rainforest. More than 20% of the earth’s oxygen comes from the rainforest.
