Rocko and the Rock Agama Rock Concert

Larry the Letter Carrier jumped onto Simba Kopje in the African savannas the other day and I began telling him about the Rock Agama Rock Concert, and he was like, whoa mate – put it in a letter so I can share with my online friends.

Hello! My name is Rocko and I am a Mwanza flat-headed rock agama. I am pretty famous for my bright red and blue coloring. Some even refer to me as Spider-Man! May is music festival time and the Rock Agama Rock Concert on Simba Kopje is the biggest concert around! With all the guitars, drums and singers, the kopje actually rocks!! I was invited to the VIL (Very Important Lizard) Lounge. They had the place decked out with big screens for viewing the concert, surround sound to rock out to, and so much yummy food! I lounged out for a bit but decided I wanted to be out on the kopje and see the concert in person.

You could feel the heat coming from the kopje. It felt so good to soak up the sun. The vibrations of the sound equipment caused crackles of energy. My skin tingled, it was like a jolt of electricity zapping through me! I felt every beat of the drum. Boom, Boom, Boom. The concert was in full motion swing.

When the Rock Agamas started rocking, every animal around came out to hear their sound. It was a time of unity and community, there were no predators, just partiers! Fun times on Simba Kopje.

The kopje is home to a variety of agamas, snakes, and hyraxes. But this one day in May, the rock is jamming with a multitude of animals on the rock, at the base of the rock and flying above the rock. Almost every inch of the kopje was covered. For the ones that call it home, we know when the day comes to an end we will all be back to our quiet lives again.

It is nice seeing the neighbors come out of the crevices of the stone to dance and sing. As the beats got louder, I thought I saw a piece of rock moving and falling off the kopje, but no it was just Pilo the rock python. His skin colors match so perfectly with the stone colors he is almost invisible – pretty much his superpower! On the other side of the Rock Agamas, I was surprised to see Malik and Bisa, two black mambas twisting and dancing. I was not surprised to see Hinna the hyrax out grooving and moving. Her and her colony are the out and about neighbors. And they love to sing.

Bobbing our heads up and down, we rocked out from morning to night, which is saying a lot for me. I am diurnal. I like spending my time in the warm daylight. Mostly sitting and waiting for something to come my way. And the mambas are usually a bit on the nervous side and flee home to their lair if there is too much commotion. The hyraxes with their suction-cup feet, and built-in sun visors in their eyes (a bulge in the iris that helps block the sun) always climb to the top of the kopje to take in as much of the sun’s heat as possible, they don’t have the best internal temperature control. As for Pilo the rock python – he is sort of in charge of Simba Kopje. He is the largest snake in Africa. When he hisses, we listen.

As the Rock Agama Rock Concert comes to an end, we all applaud, laugh, and sing, and give our neighbors a hug. Another May Day has come to an end. And dare I say just in time, the rain has moved in.

Your friend,

Rocko Rock Agama

Do you remember? What is the name of the kopje that Larry the Letter Carried jumped onto and where the Rock Agama Rock Concert was held? Other than Rocko, what else is he known as? What is Pilo the rock python’s superpower?

Additional tidbits – Rock agamas use head bobbing and push-ups as a way to communicate. They also change colors when alarmed. And a group of rock agamas is called a lounge.

A kopje is a large rock formation in the African savannas. Simba Kopje is estimated to be over 500 million years old!

Rock pythons can be 15 feet long! And they have heat-sensing pits along their upper lips, acting like infrared cameras so they can track warm-blooded prey.

Black mambas like to move into a place and stay for many years.

Rock hyraxes might resemble a rodent, but they are related to elephants! One weird fact about hyraxes, they have a communal bathroom! They use the same specific areas of the rock for generations. Over time, the urine creates large white stains on the cliffs that can be seen from miles away.

May is the wettest month in the Serengeti, with heavy burst of rain happening in the evenings.
