Talon-tastic Adventures in Brazil

Ola, my fabulous friends! Tallie Harpy Eagle here, and I have a talon-tastic story to share with you! I don’t know what you know about Harpy Eagles, but we are feather fierce with our double crest crowns and giant grasping talons. Our claws are larger than those of a grizzly bear—if you can imagine that!

The Journey Begins

As impressive as my talons are, I knew I could make them show-stopping. So, I decided to compete in the Talon Salon Nail Competition. If I win, my talon designs would appear in the Talon Lookbook, and designers around the world would see my talon masterpieces.

You might be wondering why I started beautifying my talons. The reason is fear. Everyone I meet is always afraid of my ginormous claws. I wanted all the birds and animals of the rainforest to love my majestic talons. So, I thought a little color could change everything. And it did! I polished my talons with bright, beautiful colors. Soon, I began receiving compliments and having conversations about my totally awesome talons. Next, I added a little glitter. The sparkle really sparked ohhs and ahhs! My talons were a massive hit. I then decided the bigger, the better—and began creating talon masterpieces.

The Competition Awaits

When I heard about the Talon Salon Nail Competition, I knew it was the next step in showing the world that talons don’t have to be terrorizing; they can be treasures! The competition had three theme categories: Butterfly Fantasy, Fantastic Frogs and Flowers, and Carnival of a Thousand Gems. I spent countless hours practicing and preparing for the competition. I was ready to show my terrific talons.

I had some tough competition. From big to small, there were tons of talons on display. The Hyacinth Macaw showcased her Butterfly Fantasy design. The Great Kiskadee showed off their Fantastic Frogs and Flowers design. The Scarlet Macaw unveiled her Carnival of a Thousand Gems talons. They were all pretty spectacular!

The Moment of Truth

All the contestants and spectators waited patiently for the judges to announce the winners of each category.

To my surprise, I won all three categories! I was so happy I soared high into the sky (easy to do with a 6-foot wingspan!). I flew all the way to my nest on top of the kapok tree and held my trophy with immense pride!

Additional Tidbits

The harpy eagle is one of the world's largest and most powerful eagles. They can pick up and carry monkeys and sloths. A harpy eagle’s talon is about 5 inches long, while a grizzly bear’s can be 2 to 4 inches long. From front talon tip to back talon tip, the foot of the harpy eagle is about 9 inches wide! They weigh around 20 pounds with a wingspan over 6 feet. The adult female is about the height of a 3-year-old child! They live in nests on top of the kapok trees, which have an umbrella-shaped crown. The kapok tree can grow over 200 feet tall. Nail competitions are a real thing! And nail art can be amazing, just like the designs on the talons. Have you ever had a manicure and polished your nails?
